KWANZAA VIRTUAL 5K
RUN/WALK/BIKE/SKATE/TREADMILL
Race, Support, Celebrate. Virtually. Host a Meet-Up.
Join Fit, Black, and Educated, Inc. for our third annual Kwanzaa Virtual 5K within the We Are Run Series. This is a free community run/walk. The theme for the 2022 Kwanzaa Virtual 5K is Ujamaa. Ujamaa, the Fourth Principle of Kwanzaa means 'Cooperative Economics' - “To build our own businesses, control the economics of our own community and share in all its work and wealth.”
Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach. After the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring African-Americans together as a community. He founded US, a cultural organization, and started to research African “first fruit” (harvest) celebrations. Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.
